Around two thirds of industrial final energy consumption is used for process heat. It is therefore worth assessing a heat supply system not only by the energy price, but also by the actual energy input required.
Our calculator shows how useful heat demand, operating hours, energy prices and the efficiency of a fired reference boiler influence the cost comparison.
Modernising or electrifying an existing system
You already operate a fired boiler and would like to understand how direct electric heating could affect your ongoing energy costs. Use the actual or a realistically estimated combustion efficiency of your existing boiler.
Planning a new system
You are planning a new heat supply system and would like to compare which technology could be economically suitable for your application at an early stage. Use the expected efficiency of an appropriate fired reference boiler.
Calculate your systems annual energy demand by entering the heat demand, planned or actual full-load hours, your energy prices and the efficiency of a fired reference boiler.
Note: The result is a simplified assessment based on your inputs and does not replace a detailed technical or commercial evaluation. The calculation is performed entirely locally in your browser.
Assess energy costs on a sound basis
The price per kilowatt-hour alone is not enough. Only when energy price, efficiency and operating hours are considered together does it become clear how much energy must actually be purchased.
Put electrification into perspective
Direct electric heating can reduce energy input because conversion losses from a combustion system are avoided. Whether this also creates an economic advantage depends largely on your price level and application.
Identify the next steps
The result indicates whether a more detailed assessment may be worthwhile – for example, for direct electric heating, heat recovery, a high-temperature heat pump or optimisation of the existing boiler.
A cost advantage for direct electric heating can be a reason to assess technical feasibility in greater detail. Conversely, an initially higher electricity-cost forecast does not automatically mean that electrification is unsuitable.
Investment costs, CO₂ costs, funding opportunities, available grid capacity, load profiles and the use of waste heat can all change the overall assessment.
We evaluate together which heat supply solution is technically and economically suitable for your process.
