Flue Gas Heated Thermal Oil System for Waste Heat Recovery

Efficient industrial waste heat recovery for process heating

A flue gas heated thermal oil system uses the thermal energy of hot exhaust gases to generate high-temperature process heat. Instead of releasing valuable waste heat into the atmosphere, the energy is transferred to circulating thermal oil through a specially designed heat exchanger.

This allows industrial companies to recover existing thermal energy, reduce additional fuel consumption and improve the overall energy efficiency of their production processes.

AURA develops and manufactures flue gas heated thermal oil systems with heating capacities of up to 15 MW and thermal oil temperatures of up to 430 °C.

How does a Flue gas heated thermal oil system work?

Many industrial processes generate hot exhaust gases that still contain considerable amounts of thermal energy.

A flue gas heated thermal oil system recovers this energy and makes it available for other industrial processes.

The operating principle consists of four steps:

  1. Hot flue gas flows through a specially designed heat exchanger.
  2. Circulating thermal oil absorbs the thermal energy.
  3. The heated thermal oil transports the recovered heat to connected process consumers.
  4. After releasing its heat, the thermal oil returns to the system for reheating.

Automated temperature control ensures that the thermal oil temperature is adjusted to the process requirements.

The result is a reliable supply of industrial process heat using energy that would otherwise remain unused.

Advantages of flue gas heated thermal oil systems

  • Reduce fuel consumption: By recovering existing waste heat, less additional energy is required to supply industrial processes with thermal energy. This can reduce fuel consumption in conventional heating systems.
  • Lower operating costs: Using available waste heat can reduce the amount of purchased energy required for process heating. The potential savings depend on operating hours, available waste heat and current energy costs.
  • Reduce CO₂ emissions: Waste heat recovery can reduce CO₂ emissions when recovered thermal energy replaces heat that would otherwise be generated through additional fuel combustion. The actual reduction depends on the existing heating system and operating conditions.
  • Improve overall energy efficiency: Instead of releasing high-temperature exhaust gases unused into the atmosphere, their thermal energy is transferred to a useful industrial process. This improves the overall energy utilization of the production system.
  • Reliable continuous operation: AURA flue gas heated thermal oil systems are designed for demanding industrial applications and continuous operation.
  • Integration into existing systems: Depending on the existing infrastructure, flue gas heated thermal oil systems can be integrated into existing process heating systems. This allows companies to improve energy efficiency without necessarily replacing the complete process heat infrastructure.
