Fired Thermal Oil Heating Systems for Industrial Process Heat

Reliable and efficient process heating up to 430°C

AURA fired thermal oil heating systems provide reliable high-temperature process heat for demanding industrial applications.

Thermal energy generated through the controlled combustion of gaseous or liquid fuels is transferred to circulating thermal oil. The heated thermal oil then supplies the connected industrial processes with the required thermal energy.

With heating capacities ranging from 100 kW to 25 MW and thermal oil temperatures of up to 430°C, AURA fired thermal oil heaters are suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Thermal oil enables high process temperatures at comparatively low system pressures. Combined with precise temperature control and robust system design, this makes fired thermal oil heating systems particularly suitable for continuous industrial operation.

AURA develops and manufactures individually engineered systems according to the required heating capacity, operating temperature, fuel type and process conditions.

Technical specifications of AURA fired thermal oil heating systems

System efficiency: Up to 97%, depending on configuration
System design: Individually engineered
Installation: Vertical or horizontal configuration

The actual system design depends on the required heating capacity, supply and return temperatures, thermal oil flow rate, selected fuel and operating conditions.

How does a fired thermal oil heating system work?

A fired thermal oil heating system generates process heat through the controlled combustion of a suitable fuel.

A circulation pump transports the thermal oil through the heater. Inside the heater, a burner generates a controlled flame, and the resulting heat is transferred through the heating surfaces to the circulating thermal oil.

The heated thermal oil then flows to the connected process consumers, such as industrial presses, dryers or reactors.

After transferring its thermal energy to the production process, the cooled thermal oil returns to the heater and is reheated.

This closed-loop system enables continuous heat supply and precise temperature control.

Unlike conventional steam systems, thermal oil systems can achieve high operating temperatures at comparatively low pressures.

Advantages of fired thermal oil systems

  • High thermal output: Fired thermal oil heaters are particularly suitable for industrial applications requiring high and continuous thermal output. With heating capacities of up to 25 MW, AURA systems can supply both individual heat consumers and large industrial process heating networks.
  • High energy efficiency: AURA fired thermal oil heating systems feature an efficient three-pass heater design for optimized heat transfer. Depending on the system configuration, optional combustion air preheating can increase system efficiency to up to 97%. The actual efficiency depends on operating conditions, fuel type and system design.
  • Precise temperature control: The heating output can be adjusted to match the current process heat demand. This enables reliable temperature control and stable operating conditions, even when process requirements change.
  • High temperatures at comparatively low pressure: Thermal oil enables high process temperatures without requiring the high saturation pressures associated with steam at comparable temperatures. This makes thermal oil particularly suitable for demanding high-temperature industrial processes.
  • Flexible fuel options: Depending on the burner and system configuration, AURA fired thermal oil heaters can operate with different gaseous and liquid fuels.
  • Robust design for continuous operation: AURA systems are engineered for demanding industrial operating conditions and reliable continuous heat supply.

Improving the efficiency of existing fired thermal oil systems

Existing fired thermal oil heating systems can often be optimized without replacing the entire installation.

Possible measures include:

  • Combustion air preheating
  • Flue gas heat recovery
  • Burner optimization
  • Improved temperature control
  • Replacement of individual components
  • Adaptation to changing process requirements

Practical example: Reducing energy costs with an air preheater

AURA optimized an existing fired thermal oil system used in industrial potato chip production. The system has a heating capacity of 1,500 kW and operates at temperatures of up to 280°C.

By integrating a combustion air preheater, the system efficiency increased from 85% to 93%.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fired Thermal Oil Heating Systems

Thermal oil enables high process temperatures at comparatively low system pressures.

Unlike steam systems, thermal oil circuits do not require conventional condensate return systems or continuous boiler water treatment.

The most suitable heat transfer medium depends on the specific process requirements.

Depending on the burner and system configuration, AURA fired thermal oil heaters can operate with natural gas, fuel oil, diesel, heavy fuel oil, hydrogen or customer-specific special fuels.

The economic viability depends on fuel and electricity prices, operating hours, required heating capacity, investment costs and available infrastructure.

Fired systems can be attractive for high continuous thermal demand, while electric systems may offer advantages through lower combustion-related maintenance and the possibility of using renewable electricity.
